Jack Carson has been told he has the edge required to play international cricket.
The spinner from Northern Ireland could be a key man for the county this season as he gets his first taste of top-flight Championship cricket.
Sussex’s return to the elite after ten years away starts versus Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Friday.
Head coach Paul Farbrace said: “I think he can definitely be an international cricketer.
“One thing he has found, the challenging bit for him, isn’t his skill level. It is controlling emotions at times.
“I think as a young cricketer I would rather he has that edge that he has to work hard to control than being the other way.
“If you are going to play international cricket, you have got to have a bit of something about you.
“If you haven’t got that bit of edge, that is something that allows you to fight and scrap, then it is very hard to play international cricket.
“I think he has got not only the skill level but also the personality and the character to not only do a good job but to really thrive.
“He is still a young cricketer but his improvement and his desire to improve every day are outstanding.
“I think that is what gives him a great chance.”
Sussex skipper John Simpson added: “There is no ceiling on Jack’s ability.
“At 23 years old he has taken 53 Championship wickets, which is outstanding.
“I have asked him to do a lot of tough work for me, bowling at the bottom end to the short side, and he has never shied away from that.
“That is what you want in international cricket.
“You want someone who is going to nag you for the ball, take wickets and score handy runs with the bat and he is a brilliant fielder.
“He brings a lot of enthusiasm to the group as well.”
