Promising Cumbrian athlete Freddie Strong added another medal to his growing collection by winning pentathlon silver at the England Indoor Combined Event Championships.

The Keswick teenager performed well in the Under-15 boys’ event to make it onto the podium.

Strong, competing for Border Harriers Athletic Club, amassed 2,815 points in the contest which comprised the 60m hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 800m.

He produced a series of strong performances, including victory in the long jump with a personal best distance of 5.94m, a personal best time of 2.19.36 in the 800m, and a second-placed effort in the high jump at 1.74cm.

Strong was in the lead at one stage after his outstanding long jump effort followed a time of 9.24 seconds in the 60m hurdles.

The shot put and high jump then saw Guernsey’s Emil Friedrich and Blackheath and Bromley’s Jack Ruby overtake the young Cumbrian.

Yet Strong’s own efforts in the high jump and 800m kept him in the medal frame.

Gold went to Ruby with 2,926 points with Strong earning silver ahead of Wirral’s Jay Husain. Friedrich amassed the most points overall but was competing as a guest.

The young Cumbrian’s achievement in Sheffield, in a field of 20 competitors from across the country, brought an end to his indoor season which has brought further success.

The Keswick School student won two gold medals, in the long jump and high jump, at the North of England Indoor Championships, also in Sheffield. He also took bronze in the 60m hurdles at the same event.

He is now looking ahead to the summer season where he is set to compete in a number of further regional and national events.

The promising all-rounder attends Carlisle’s Sheepmount twice a week, where his coaches include John Little, Lenny Miller and Mel Brocklebank.
