Isak deserves 'bigger and better' than Arsenal... like Liverpool or Man City

12:30 , Alex Young

Paul Scholes says Alexander Isak deserves "bigger and better" than Arsenal.

The Gunners have long been linked with the Newcastle striker, who has at times been touted as Mikel Arteta's 'dream' signing.

Isak is expected to leave Newcastle in the future, and could command a fee in excess of the £105million Arsenal paid for Declan Rice.

But Scholes believes the Sweden star is destined for greater things.

"Everyone loves him but I don’t see a possibility of him going to Arsenal," Scholes said on The Overlap. "He needs to go bigger and better.

"We’re talking about Real Madrid here, Liverpool need a centre forward. I think Arsenal would be an option but I think they would be down the list of options.”

Why Harry Kane to Arsenal move 'makes sense'

10:00 , Alex Young

Harry Kane "suits Arsenal down to the ground", says Joe Cole, as the Tottenham legend is tipped to make a stunning move to the north London rivals.

“I can see the logic with Harry Kane joining Arsenal – stranger things have happened,” former Chelsea man Cole told Paddy Power.

“He’s gone to Germany, and he’s carried on where he left off. The man just oozes goals. For Arsenal, as a footballer, he would be the perfect last piece in the jigsaw – he suits them down to the ground.

“I can’t see it, however, there’s such a wrench between the two clubs. I think it would be too much for Harry. Sol Campbell joining Arsenal from Spurs was a bit different to this, but from a football perspective, it makes a lot of sense, because he is perfect for their style of football."

Manchester United tipped to make Xavi Simons move

Friday 7 February 2025 11:04 , Alex Young

Manchester United have been tipped to make a move for Xavi Simons in the summer, just a week after the player signed permanently for RB Leipzig.

Simons has turned into loan move from Paris Saint-Germain into a permanent deal for around £50million, but eyebrows were raised when the player only signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.

BILD journalist Christian Falk believes Leipzig will cash in on the player in the summer.

“It’s looking likely that Leipzig will sell Xavi Simons in the summer transfer window,” he told CaughtOffside.

“It was a little bit surprising that Leipzig committed to a permanent deal with Simons. At the beginning, they didn’t think they’d get this chance, but they did it for €50m, which isn’t a lot for this kind of player. His contract, of course, isn’t that long, running just until 2027.

“So, you see, his stock is rising! Leipzig are thinking they have signed a player for €50m who has the potential to be an €80m player, so they could earn a lot of money on a potential sale. I’m sure there’s a gentleman’s agreement or a release clause, which would see Simons sold in the summer.

“Liverpool are interested, as are Manchester City and Manchester United. Xavi Simons won’t stay at Leipzig for his whole career – but everyone already knows that! Leipzig had the chance because PSG were happy to sell as they can’t loan so many players in Europe."

Harry Kane reacts to Mathys Tel loan move to Tottenham

Tuesday 4 February 2025 17:33 , Alex Young

Harry Kane believes Tottenham is the ideal club for loan signing Mathys Tel to fulfil his potential.

France Under-21 international Tel had struggled to break into Vincent Kompany's plans at the Allianz Arena, and saw his game time diminishing significantly.

Spurs' record goalscorer Kane left for Germany in August 2023 and played alongside Tel with Bayern.

The England captain has no doubt his former Bayern team-mate can go on to make an impact as part of Ange Postecoglou's squad.

"It is a great move for both parties. Mathys is a great guy, really hard-working and full of potential," Kane said in a chat with fans on the Cleats Club app.

Arteta 'disappointed' by Arsenal failure to sign a striker a January

Tuesday 4 February 2025 15:16 , Alex Young

Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal are “disappointed” by their failure to sign a striker in January.

The Gunners wanted to bring in a new forward but failed in a move for Ollie Watkins and ultimately did not get anyone in.

Speaking on Tuesday, Arteta said: "We had a clear intention. We haven't achieved it. So we are disappointed.

“But we are aware that we only want to bring certain types of players, so we have to be disciplined."

Arsenal made a bid for Watkins but Aston Villa chose to sell Jhon Duran to Al Nassr instead.

Arsenal hold firm on Zinchenko

Tuesday 4 February 2025 14:45 , Matt Verri

Arsenal refused to let Oleksandr Zinchenko leave the club on loan in the January window.

There was interest from Borussia Dortmund and it had appeared likely that Zinchenko, who has started only two Premier League matches this season, would leave.

However, The Athletic report that Dortmund were keen on a loan move, while the Gunners made it clear they would only allow a permanent sale.

Ferguson a risk-free signing for West Ham

Tuesday 4 February 2025 13:57 , Matt Verri

The closing of the transfer window, a little over an hour after full-time in West Ham’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Monday night, will have come as a relief to Graham Potter.

Twenty-seven days after taking over, he is finally free of the need to juggle dual priorities, to wonder what his squad will look like by the end of deadline day.

Potter can now truly set to work with a clear mind, knowing where he stands, as he seeks to get West Ham going in the second half of the season.

The 49-year-old will be pleased to have the January window behind him, but also to have strengthened his attack.

Evan Ferguson’s arrival on a straight loan from Brighton reunites him with Potter, under whom he became one of English football’s best teenage talents a few years ago. His game time then fell away under Roberto De Zerbi - and fell off a cliff under Fabian Hurzeler.

It is a risk-free signing, with Ferguson desperate for Premier League minutes and certain to get them at a club so lacking a prolific striker (and right now lacking any fit and available strikers at all, Danny Ings aside).

Analysis of Chelsea transfer window

Tuesday 4 February 2025 13:08 , Matt Verri

The word from Chelsea was that this would be the first transfer window post the two-year period of churn that had entirely regenerated their playing squad, and in some sense it lived up to billing.

There were no blockbuster additions in January, and certainly no hint of the kind of uber-splurge that saw Enzo Fernandez, Mykhalio Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Benoit Badiashile and Malo Gusto brought in for more than £250m two Januarys ago.

There was interest briefly explored in Marc Guehi and at one stage a serious bid for Alejandro Garnacho looked to be in the offing, but neither came to pass.

In the end, a loan recall for Trevor Chalobah provided the only significant addition to Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad, with teenage midfielder Mathis Amougou - whose signing from Saint-Etienne is yet to be announced - and Aaron Anselmino, recalled from Boca Juniors, both viewed as prospects for the future.

Tel reveals Odobert played key transfer role

Tuesday 4 February 2025 12:33 , Matt Verri

Mathys Tel has revealed Wilson Odobert played an important role in his deadline day move to Tottenham.

The Bayern Munich winger had initially turned down Spurs, but made a U-turn as he flew to London on deadline day to complete the switch from Bayern Munich.

Tel has signed on loan until the end of the season but Spurs have the option to make it a permanent deal in the summer for £45million, which would see the 19-year-old sign a six-year contract.

In his first interview since joining the club, Tel spoke of his close bond with Odobert, who has played alongside for the France youth teams.

“I talked with Wilson,” Tel said. “He told me: ‘Come, you have to come here’.

“He’s my friend, I played with him for the French team. He’s a good friend and he told me I should come, [that] it’s a great team and I’ll see it’s very nice.”

Willian undergoing Fulham medical

Tuesday 4 February 2025 11:58

Willian is close to completing his return to Fulham.

A deal was agreed on deadline day, but there was no need for the move to be completed before Monday’s 11pm deadline as Willian had been without a club.

The 36-year-old left Olympiacos in December, just three months after he signed for the Greek club following the expiring of his contract at Fulham.

It is expected that the move will be announced later today, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Willian is currently undergoing a medical.

Analysis of Arsenal's window

Tuesday 4 February 2025 11:35 , Matt Verri

A deal involving a player called Maldini makes Arsenal’s transfer deadline day sound far more exciting than it was.

In reality, it lacked the fireworks fans were hoping for and Arsenal have taken a big gamble by not signing a new forward.

There was an argument Mikel Arteta’s side needed reinforcements even before injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus - but now they look very light on attacking options.

An injury to Kai Havertz would leave Arsenal without a recognised striker.

Leandro Trossard could fill in there, however he is one of just four options out wide. The other three wingers are Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel Martinelli and Raheem Sterling.

Nwaneri has been repurposed into an option out wide, which means Arsenal are now a midfielder light. Sterling has started just eight games this season, scoring once.

Such a lack of depth is why Arsenal went into transfer deadline day still trying to bring in a striker.

In the end, the only deal in or out of the club involved teenage centre-back Maldini Kacurri joining League Two side Bromley on loan.

West Ham announce Steidten departure

Tuesday 4 February 2025 10:53 , Matt Verri

West Ham have announced that technical director Tim Steidten has left the club.

Steidten joined in the summer of 2023 to head up the recruitment strategy and scouting departments.

But questionable decisions led him to become unpopular with the Hammers faithful, and the arrival of Kyle Macaulay as head of recruitment shortly after Graham Potter was appointed manager meant the writing was on the wall for Steidten.

Signings such as Luis Guilherme, Niclas Fullkrug and Guido Rodriguez led to Steidten receiving criticism both internally and externally for his decision-making.

Steidten’s relationship with Potter’s two predecessors, David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui, had become strained by the end. He was told to stay away from Moyes and the first-team squad for the final weeks of last season.

A statement from the club this morning read: “West Ham United Football Club can confirm that Technical Director Tim Steidten will be leaving the Club. Tim has been instrumental in our recruitment efforts.

“With the arrival of our new Head Coach Graham Potter, who has brought in his own Head of Recruitment, it is time for Tim to pursue new opportunities.

“We would like to thank Tim for his dedication and hard work and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Chilwell explains decision to join Crystal Palace

Tuesday 4 February 2025 10:32 , Matt Verri

Ben Chilwell has revealed that a conversation with Oliver Glasner convinced him to join Crystal Palace.

Chilwell was the Eagles’ deadline-day signing as he arrived at the club on a six-month straight loan from Chelsea.

Palace will pay around half of his wages until the end of the campaign.

“I’m very excited,” Chilwell said. “I spoke to the manager [Glasner] and it is a club that are going in a great direction.

“You look at the last few months, with the results and how the team's playing, and with the players they’ve got, it was a no-brainer to make the decision to come here. I’m just really excited to get going.

“When it comes to the style of football that he [Glasner] wants to play — and obviously playing in a back five with wing-backs is something that I'm familiar with, I did it the season at Chelsea we won the Champions League — it's something that I enjoy.

“The attacking side of things suits me as a player, and he [Glasner] emphasised that it was something that he really wants from his wing-backs, which obviously excited me.”

Arsenal's pursuit of Watkins explained

Tuesday 4 February 2025 10:07 , Matt Verri

Arsenal’s bid for Ollie Watkins was led by Mikel Arteta.

That’s according to The Athletic, with it claimed others at the club were concerned about spending big on a player who will turn 30 at the end of the year.

Arsenal submitted an offer due to Arteta’s interest, but there was an acceptance a deal would be impossible once Al-Nassr moved to sign Jhon Duran.

Tel reveals key Kane conversation

Tuesday 4 February 2025 09:41 , Matt Verri

Mathys Tel has revealed he spoke to Harry Kane before making his deadline day move from Bayern Munich to Tottenham.

Tel moved to Spurs on Monday in a dramatic late deal that sees him join Tottenham on loan for the rest of this season.

A deal for the 19-year-old forward had looked dead last week, but Tottenham were able to resurrect it on deadline day to provide head coach Ange Postecoglou with some much-needed attacking reinforcements.

Tel has now explained how former Tottenham striker Kane played his part as he spoke to him before deciding to join Spurs.

Kane is Tel’s team-mate at Bayern after leaving Tottenham to join them in 2023 and he told the teenager he would enjoy his time in north London if he made the move.

“He told me this is a big club with a lot of very good people,” said Tel. “The pitch is very nice. The training centre is very good.

“And if you go there, you can enjoy it. So everything was positive from Harry Kane.”

Three ways Tottenham could use Tel

Tuesday 4 February 2025 08:40 , Matt Verri

Left-wing

Heung-min Son may be having a middling season by his high standards but the Korean remains Spurs' captain and an experienced player in an otherwise raw squad.

When fit, Son is still one of the first names on Postecoglou's team-sheet but he has looked jaded this winter, and Tel offers a potentially high-quality rotation option from the bench or when the 32-year-old needs a rest. Son could even switch to the right flank to accommodate his new team-mate, although he is happier on the left.

Possible Spurs XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Sarr, Kulusevski; Johnson, Solanke, Tel.

Mathys Tel shirt number confirmed

Tuesday 4 February 2025 06:47 , Matt Verri

Tottenham secured the deadline day signing of Mathys Tel in a major boost to Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss had been desperate to strengthen in attack to help combat an ongoing injury crisis and the club won the race to sign the 19-year-old winger from Bayern Munich.

Tel has joined Spurs on loan until the end of the season and the club will have the option to make the move a permanent one for £45million. Should that be activated, Tel will sign a six-year contract at Tottenham.

The teenager will wear the number 11 shirt for the club this season, which had been vacant since Bryan Gil’s summer departure to Girona.

Erik Lamela, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart are the other players to have that shirt number over the past 15 years.

The truth about Arsenal's bid for Ollie Watkins

Monday 3 February 2025 23:51 , Alex Young

Aston Villa told Arsenal that they were prepared to discuss selling Ollie Watkins for £60million.

But the Gunners would only offer £40m and they never returned with another offer.

That’s according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who reports: “On Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa gave Arsenal the opportunity to do this deal or have a conversation on the basis of a £60m possibility. That was something clearly Arsenal were not prepared to do at that value — they decided to suggest around the £40m mark.”

“Villa were being serious when they suggested £60m, that’s what they would have been prepared to have a conversation for. We don’t know if it would have led to an offer being accepted, but the door was clearly opened at that level.”

“For somebody that’s gone on record to say he’s an Arsenal supporter and it would have been his dream move, perhaps Watkins would have pushed for it if it came close, but it didn’t come close.

“There was no attempt by Arsenal to go again.”
